In today’s world of information overload, it can be challenging to identify trustworthy sources for your research. When working on an important project, report, or proposal, how can you ensure the information you gather is reliable?

This workshop will equip you with the skills to research any topic using various tools. We will begin with fundamental techniques such as reading strategies, memory recall, note-taking, and planning. Additionally, we’ll cover how to create different types of outlines tailored to various stages of your project and how to transition from outlining to writing, editing, and refining your work.

Most importantly, we’ll explore how to effectively utilize a range of sources, including the library’s Dewey Decimal System, academic journals, and online resources.

By the end of this course, you will be well-prepared to find dependable information on any subject and transform that information into a compelling and accurate written piece.

Course Content

WHY ARE RESEARCH SKILLS IMPORTANT?
Effective research skills are crucial because not all information, especially from the internet, is reliable. Good research skills enable you to assess the validity of information, remember what you read, and communicate your findings effectively. They also require efficient reading, critical thinking, and strong organizational skills, making you more credible and knowledgeable.

BASIC SKILLS
In this session, we will introduce a model that you can use to analyze, read, and summarize any type of information. Additionally, we will explore techniques to improve your memory skills, helping you retain and recall important details more effectively.

PLANNING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY
In this session, we will cover three key actions to take before you begin your writing process.

WHERE TO LOOK AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR
In this session, we will discuss the different types of sources that might be used when researching, including which type is preferable (and why). We will also provide a checklist of things to consider in determining if a source is credible or not.

FINDING INFORMATION THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY
In this session, we will explore various research sources, including traditional reference materials, journals, trade publications, and our own professional networks. As we discuss these topics, take note of any ideas that may inspire your future research.

RESEARCHING WITH THE INTERNET
In this session, we will share some ideas for useful websites. At the end of the session, there will be an opportunity to brainstorm some research ideas for an upcoming project.

GETTING READY TO WRITE
In this session, we will share our recommended method for writing outlines, organizing notes, and getting ready to write. While working through this information, students can think about how to apply it to their own notes.

PUTTING PEN TO PAPER
In this session, we will cover some writing basics, including the four C’s, revision, and documenting sources.

RESEARCH SKILLS QUIZ
This quiz assesses participants' knowledge of essential research skills, including techniques for gathering, analyzing, and presenting information effectively. By completing the quiz, individuals will enhance their ability to conduct thorough research, leading to more informed decision-making and stronger outcomes in their projects.
