Most versions of Microsoft Word have a built-in readability checker that calculates scores based on the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level test and the Flesch Reading Ease test.

When you are using Microsoft Word, you can set it to measure your readability score with an easy to use and straightforward tool. Here is how to set it up. (These steps may be slightly different depending on the version you are using.)

  • Click the File menu (top left-hand corner)
  • Click Options
  • Select the Proofing category
  • Under the “When correcting spelling and grammar in Word” section, check the box “Show readability statistics”
  • Click OK
  • Once the feature is enabled, select Review and then perform a Spelling and Grammar check
  • Note that all errors must be corrected or ignored before the readability statistics will be shown.
